After the Coat: The House Kept Records - by Diana Piner

After the funeral, Elena stays “a few days” in the house at the end of the track. Her mother’s coat still hangs on the kitchen hook. Robert, the man who married her mother, cooks too much stew and stores his grief in doorways. Snow, the old white sheepdog, waits under the empty wool as if cloth could walk, and sleeps on the landing—the only place from which both bedrooms can be watched. Insomnia takes Elena to a log behind the barn. What begins as comfort becomes appetite: a tongue that does not speak, a lock that lasts as long as a held breath, a heat she tells herself she invented. Robert finds her on the kitchen boards and sits down instead of stopping it. Watching is a habit the house already knows. Then Elena lists the property. Strangers will walk the grain. Closets will open. Behind Robert’s shirts she finds the envelope—photographs of her mother in the same rooms, the same coat, the same dog—and a recording that refuses pretty names for what the house did with looking.
