Their touch was cold, yet it sent waves of heat through her body. Panic flooded her, but she was powerless to resist as they lifted her with an ease that defied their slender forms. They were taking her, her mind reeled with horror and fascination. As she was carried into the light, she caught one last glimpse of her car, a tiny speck of familiarity in a world that had suddenly gone mad. The light enveloped her, and she knew she was about to become a part of something she could never have imagined.

Sophia's eyes danced across the dashboard, checking the time for the third time in five minutes. She sighed and tapped her fingers impatiently on the steering wheel, the rhythm echoing the quiet hum of her old Honda's engine. Her workday had stretched later than usual, leaving her to navigate the deserted streets of her small town under the cloak of darkness. The yellow street lamps cast elongated shadows on the pavement, playing hide and seek with her headlights. She yawned, her eyes feeling heavier than the bag of groceries slumped in the passenger seat beside her.

Her thoughts drifted to the quiet warmth of her bed, the TV dinner waiting in the fridge, and the latest episode of her favorite show. The monotonous stretch of asphalt blurred into the night as the car's tires sang a lullaby of solitude. The occasional rustle of leaves in the cool evening breeze was the only company she had, or so she thought.

As she turned onto the final stretch leading to her house, a peculiar sight emerged from the shadows. In the distance, a series of lights flickered, casting an eerie glow against the night sky. They hovered just beyond the tree line, pulsating with an intensity that made her heart quicken. "Must be a party," she murmured to herself, though she knew deep down that it was unlike any gathering she had ever seen. The lights grew closer, morphing from a distant curiosity to a blinding spectacle that seemed to call out to her, beckoning her to come closer.

Her curiosity piqued, she slowed the car to a crawl, squinting to make sense of the scene unfolding before her. The lights grew larger, more defined, and she could now see that they were not from any earthly source. They hovered in an unnatural formation, unlike the stars that had been her only nighttime companions on this road countless times before. Her hand tightened on the steering wheel, and she swallowed a lump of fear that had suddenly materialized in her throat. The car's engine coughed, stuttered, and died. Silence descended, thick and suffocating, broken only by the dull thump of her heart echoing in her ears.

In that moment of quiet terror, she made a decision. With trembling legs, she pushed open the car door, the dome light casting a feeble glow on the gravel beside her. The bag of groceries remained untouched in the passenger seat, forgotten in her haste. Her feet crunched on the gravel as she stepped out into the night, the cool air a stark contrast to the warmth of the car's interior. She took a deep breath, her chest tight with anticipation. In the distance, the lights pulsed, seemingly in sync with her heartbeat.
