The banners of House Varathos fluttered in the wind, their crimson and gold colors casting long shadows on the marble floors of the great hall. I stood tall in the center of it all, clad in the ceremonial armor of my lineage, a shining testament to the destiny I had been born to fulfill. My name—Ronan Varathos—was whispered with both reverence and fear across the kingdom. Soon, I will be king, I reminded myself, my fingers tightening on the hilt of the sword strapped to my waist.

The coronation was only days away. My father, the great King Asgor Varathos, had ruled these lands for nearly four decades, conquering and expanding our borders to make Varathos the most feared kingdom in the known world. Yet, his time was ending. I had watched him grow weaker, each passing year eroding his once-great strength. Soon, he would pass the throne to me, his only son and heir. But he does not know the full truth of what awaits.

For I had greater plans than merely ruling. The bloodline of Varathos was pure, its power eternal, but there was more to it than anyone could see. It was bound by traditions older than the stones of our castles, ancient laws that dictated not only the governance of the land but the governance of blood. And so it was written: the son would inherit the father’s kingdom—and the women of his line.

My mother, the exquisite Lady Aria Varathos, was a vision of beauty beyond compare. Her raven hair fell in cascading waves over her shoulders, framing a face that had not aged a day since I was a boy. Her figure was ample, her body an enticing display of fertility and allure. She was every bit the queen, a woman who commanded respect and desire in equal measure. Soon, she would be mine—my queen, my wife, I thought, the heat rising in my chest at the thought.

And then there were my sisters. Delphine, the eldest, was a cunning beauty with sharp wit and a tongue that could twist the minds of men as easily as her body could ensnare them. Her alabaster skin and voluptuous curves made her the object of every noble’s lust, but none dared touch her—not without my permission. Then there was Lysandra, sweet and demure, though her innocence was but a facade. I had seen the way her eyes lingered on me when she thought I wasn’t watching, the subtle glances she gave my growing power.
