Broken Down, Broken In
I’m clutching the steering wheel so tight my knuckles are pale, the engine of my little sedan coughing and choking before it gives out completely on the side of this desolate rural highway. It’s late evening, the kind of dark that feels like it’s suffocating you, and I’m all alone, miles from anything that could pass for help. I’ve just come from a spa weekend, a pathetic stab at breaking the monotony of my suburban existence, and now this mess. No cell service, no cars in sight, just me and the creepy silence of the night. My outfit doesn’t help my nerves, a tight skirt that keeps riding up my thighs, a loose tank top with nothing underneath, and heels that are useless on this gravel shoulder. I feel vulnerable, dumb for dressing like this, but a quiet part of me had craved the thrill, the hint of danger, after months of boredom with my husband.
I step out of the car, the chilly air biting at my skin, making my nipples stiffen under the thin fabric. I’m muttering curses under my breath, pacing by the hood, when I hear the low growl of an engine. Headlights slice through the blackness, and a huge truck pulls up behind me. My heart leaps, relief tangled with a prickle of anxiety as I squint to make out the driver. The door swings open, and out steps a man, a colossus of a man, towering well over six foot four, his frame stacked with muscle that strains against a tight black t-shirt. His skin is a deep, rich brown, and his arms are like steel beams, thick and powerful, veins popping under the surface. His chest is a broad wall, looking like it could crush me without breaking a sweat, and his thighs, wrapped in worn jeans, are massive, hinting at raw, untamed power. His face is stern, carved with hard lines, a square jaw, and dark eyes that pin me with an intensity that makes my gut twist. He’s everything my sheltered life never prepared me for, a living force of dominance that sends a shudder through me. I can’t stop staring, my throat dry, as he steps closer, boots crunching on the gravel.
“You good out here?” His voice is deep, rough like the gravel underfoot, and it hits me low in my belly, stirring something I didn’t expect. I stumble over words, explaining my car broke down, trying to keep my eyes on his face and not the way his shirt clings to every hard ridge of muscle. He nods, slow, his gaze dragging over me, taking in my skirt, my bare shoulders, my chest. I feel stripped under that look, and I cross my arms, trying to hide how my body’s already reacting.
