**Cheap**
“Just look who it is!”
Courtney burst out laughing as she watched the couple. A good-looking young guy was closing the taxi door behind a girl.
“I don’t know them.”
Caroline frowned, trying to figure out what was so funny.
The girls were sitting on the open terrace of a trendy café with a noisy group. The evening was going well. Caroline had already finished two glasses of wine, and her friend was keeping pace. Caroline was wearing a new expensive dress, her thick dark hair curled into soft waves. She felt the extra attention from her classmates but shut it down with cold smiles, considering the guys beneath her.
“So what’s wrong with them?”
“That girl’s a cheap whore. I heard she does it for money. And that guy, Nick…” Courtney took a sip. “Acts like some rich alpha male. Screws girls left and right.”
“How disgusting.” Caroline wrinkled her nose. “Then this Nick’s a whore himself.”
She said it a little too loudly, and a guy walking past overheard.
“You talking about me?”
He walked straight up to their table. He was wearing a good suit, and his hair looked freshly styled. Nick was only a little older than Caroline, but he carried himself with striking confidence.
Caroline wasn’t scared. There were guys all around who would gladly stand up for her, so she gave him a haughty look.
“They say you screw cheap whores, and anyone who does that is a cheap whore himself.”
“And who exactly are you calling a cheap whore?”
“Anyone who sells themselves for money.”
“Everyone sells themselves. It’s just that every person has their own price.”
“I definitely don’t sell myself.” She arched an eyebrow.
“Is that so.” He slowly lit a cigarette. “How about we take a walk and I try to change your mind? Or are you afraid of me?”
“As if.” Caroline pushed her chair back and stood up.
Someone in the group whistled, expecting a show.
Nick simply offered to walk along the street with her.
The sun was beginning to set. The narrow street was packed, cars honking and stuck in traffic.
“And how exactly are you planning to change my mind?”
Her tone was still haughty, but she was curious what he might offer.
“Do you have a dream?”
She thought for a moment.
“Everyone has a dream.” She shrugged.
He waited.
“Well, I guess I’d like to become a singer. Record my own album. Studying economics doesn’t appeal to me.”
