# [ALIEN] Abducted Mate
Mamacita was thirty years old, camping alone in the West Texas desert because she liked the quiet and she liked being the kind of woman who didn't need anyone else's permission to disappear for a weekend.
She had her tent pitched in a flat wash between two ridges, a little fire going, a cooler of food, and the whole black bowl of the sky poured over her head like somebody had tipped it out just for her. She'd been sitting with her boots off and her feet toward the fire for maybe an hour, watching the Milky Way burn, when the stars started moving wrong.
Not twinkling. Moving. A hole of perfect blackness slid across the sky, blotting out whole constellations as it came, and then the hole lit up from the inside — a ring of violet light blooming open like an eye.
Her heart slammed into her ribs. She scrambled up, firelight catching her bare feet, and her mouth went dry. It wasn't a plane. It wasn't anything she had a word for. It was a ship, vast and silent, hanging over the desert like a held breath, and a pillar of pale blue light dropped out of its belly and speared straight down into the wash fifty feet from her tent.
The light hit the sand and the sand sang.
She ran. Of course she ran — she was thirty, not stupid — but her legs were bare under her sleep shorts and the desert was all rock and thorn, and three steps in the light bent sideways like water and wrapped around her waist and lifted her clean off the ground.
Mamacita screamed. The sound went nowhere. The beam carried her up through the night air, her hair whipping, her tank top riding up, sand falling off her skin in glittering streams, and the ship's belly opened like a mouth and swallowed her whole.
Darkness. A hum she felt in her teeth. Then gravity again, gentle, setting her down on a floor that was warm and gave slightly under her bare feet like living skin.
Light rose around her — soft, amber, pulsing — and she was in a round chamber with no doors she could see, walls that breathed slow as a sleeping animal. And she was not alone.
