Come Here: Before She Meant To - by Cassandra Mile

Elena has spent two years keeping a quiet house and a quieter body. Widowed by divorce, large in ways she dresses to erase, she packs lunches for Luca—twenty-four, her stepson since he was a boy—and leaves the kitchen light on so the last warm presence in the rooms will still come home. She tells herself she is only lonely. She is also afraid of the day a girl will take him. That day almost arrives by text. He sits at the table wrecked, and she puts her hand in his hair the way she did when he was feverish and small. He turns. He looks where her blouse has failed. In the second she could close the fabric, she opens it instead, guides his mouth to her breast, and lets comfort become a wet, shaking crime neither of them will name. What follows is not a fall so much as a climate: silence at breakfast, the word mamma landing like a hand, lemon cleaner fighting sheets that will not forget. Elena hides and offers in the same motion.
