Sarah winced as she applied concealer to the purple bruise blooming beneath her left eye. The bathroom mirror reflected a woman she barely recognized anymorehollow-eyed, thin-lipped, shoulders perpetually hunched as if expecting a blow. Mike hadn't meant to hit her that hard, he'd said afterward, but she should've known better than to question why he'd come home at three in the morning.

Her fingertips traced the edge of the bruise, careful not to press too hard against the tender flesh. The wedding photo hanging on the bathroom wall mocked her with its frozen smiles and hopeful eyes. Five years ago, Mike had looked at her like she was everythinghis voice soft when he'd promised to cherish her, his hands gentle when he'd slipped the ring onto her finger.

"Sarah! Where the fuck is my clean shirt?" Mike's voice boomed through their small suburban home, making her flinch and smear the concealer. She quickly wiped it away and reapplied, hands trembling slightly as she rushed to finish her meager attempt at disguise.

"Coming, just a second!" she called back, forcing brightness into her voice that she hadn't genuinely felt in years. The shirt was hanging in the laundry room, perfectly pressed the way he liked it, just like the five others she'd ironed last night after he'd passed out on the couch.

She hurried down the hallway, the familiar knot of anxiety tightening in her stomach with each step. Their home was spotlessshe made sure of that after the time he'd thrown the bookshelf over because he found dust on the television stand. The walls were beige, the furniture brown; Mike didn't like "feminine colors" cluttering up his space.

Mike stood in the kitchen, scrolling through his phone with one hand while the other gripped a mug of coffee she'd prepared earlier. He didn't look up when she entered, just held out his hand expectantly for the shirt. His dark hair was still damp from the shower, his jaw freshly shaved, looking every bit the successful sales manager he presented to the world.

"Here you goI pressed it twice, just how you like it," Sarah said, placing the crisp cotton button-down into his waiting hand. She took a half-step back, positioning herself near the counter where she could grip the edge if needed.

His eyes flicked up, cold and evaluating, lingering on her face. "That makeup looks like shit. Fix it before you go to the store." He shrugged into the shirt, not bothering to thank her. "And don't forget the beer this time. The good stuff, not that cheap piss you brought home last week."
