**Back Cover Blurb** On Halloween night, the veil is thin enough to touch. Lila only meant to catalog the empty Victorian before the sale. Then the power dies, the fog rolls in, and Elias appears at the foot of the stairs—cold at the edges, solid only where her hands find him. One night. One house. He stays real as long as she keeps him that way. What begins against the dining table doesn’t stay there. Bound to the bedposts, watched in the landing mirror, taken on the stairs and over the mattress, Lila learns exactly how long a ghost can last when every thrust, every grip, every shared breath anchors him. Temperature shifts from ice to heat. His outline stops flickering the deeper he drives. Then her best friend knocks. Maya doesn’t leave. She joins. Toys come out of the overnight bag. Chapter 1: Thinning

The house had been empty for eighty years. Lila told herself that as she lit the last of the pillar candles along the long dining-room table. Halloween wind shoved at the tall windows; the glass rattled in its frames. Outside, fog swallowed the bare trees and the distant orange glow of the nearest street. Inside, the air smelled of dust, beeswax, and the faint, stubborn trace of old cologne that no amount of cleaning had lifted.

She was only supposed to be here for three nights—cataloguing what the estate lawyers wanted photographed before the sale. The power had gone out at dusk. The candles were practical. The fact that she’d arranged them in a loose circle around the table was not.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Lila paused with the match still burning between her fingers. The sound came again, closer to the stairs. She set the match down. The flame guttered and died.

“Hello?” Her voice sounded small. She cleared her throat and tried again, louder. “If anyone’s here, the door was unlocked. I’m the one the firm hired.”

Silence. Then the soft, deliberate click of a heel on wood—one step, then another—descending the main staircase.

Lila’s pulse jumped. She backed toward the dining-room doorway, phone in hand, though the signal had been dead since she drove past the old iron gates. The candlelight threw her shadow long across the floorboards. A second shadow joined it.

He stood at the foot of the stairs, half in darkness. Tall. Dark hair that fell past his collar. A white shirt open at the throat, sleeves rolled, the fabric somehow both crisp and faintly translucent at the edges. His face was sharp-boned, handsome in a way that felt unfinished—mouth full, eyes too dark to read. The cold rolled off him in a wave.

“You’re early,” he said. His voice was low, edged with an accent she couldn’t place. “Or I am late. The night keeps changing its mind.”

Lila’s mouth went dry. “You’re not supposed to be here.”

“Neither are you.” He took one step forward. The candle flames bent toward him as if drawn. “But the house knows you. It opened the door.”

She should have run. Instead she stayed rooted while he closed the distance. Up close the cold was sharper—his nearness raised gooseflesh along her arms—but where the chill brushed her skin it left a trail of heat behind, as if her body were answering something it recognized.
