Caught By My Brothers
My brothers weren’t smart, but they were wily. Shaun was the smartest of the pair, and that wasn’t saying much. At 24, he was big and strong, but spoke mostly in grunts. I knew he was capable of more, but he just didn’t see the point. Brandon was 22, and just as big and stubborn. The two of them were still living at home, taking up space and eating food while barely contributing. Our farm didn’t need that many hands to work it, but there wasn’t much else available around here. We were pretty far from town, and even that was practically abandoned at this point. We were lucky the school bus was willing to come past our long driveway, so we were able to get at least a grade 8 education, but since the high school bus didn’t come down our road, Pa said we’d learned enough, and put us to work in the barn and fields.
I wasn’t about to let my brain turn to mush, though. Ma brought me books to read when she went to the city to sell her handmade baskets. She was down there every weekend in the summer, at a farmer’s market where the rich folks shopped. Those baskets brought in a good chunk of our income, and once in a while, another vendor showed up with used books, and Ma bought me a stack of whatever was cheapest. I read them all, I didn’t care. But the ones I liked best were the sappy romances where a girl was swept away by a gentle, soft man who treated her like a delicate flower. It was so far out of my realm of experience, it may as well have been about aliens. Ma must not have looked closely at the books she picked, not that she could read much anyways. She was barely literate, and Pa wasn’t much better.
Pa didn’t let me go to the market with her. He kept me home since I finished school, and the only men I ever saw were my family, or a few remaining old fellas in town. All the young people had moved away, so going into town to the small store for essentials was no treat. How was I ever going to meet some dashing man who would take me away from this place? It wasn’t too likely that a handsome, rich stranger would show up here and fall in love with me at first sight.
