He Wanted the Chair: Days the Booking Kept - by Diana Piner

Lena locks the bolt and stays bent over the arm of the chair, palm over her mouth, the street still moving beyond the curtain. The minutes are no longer hers. What holds her there has a pulse, a weight, and no interest in the sentence she just gave the landing. She had said yes to nine quiet days and a rate that would not survive being honest. Marisa needed a keeper, not a kennel. Bram needed a room that would not rush him. Lena needed the month to add up. The paper went inside the cupboard. The chair was angled toward the light. Care was the word she had for a paw on her thigh, for a bath finished because the note did not include a clause for stopping, for a waistband she pushed down so she could tell herself the dark had been heat and cloth. Extra days arrive as a courtesy. Refusal has a price. So does the text she deletes. Laundry can be folded square. A photo can be cropped at the shoulders until a sister sees only tenderness.
