With a hopeful smile, Amelia stands in the doorway of the garage, her hand resting on the dusty handlebars of an old, slightly rusted bicycle. She looks over at her father, Otis, who is engrossed in his favorite armchair, the newspaper crinkling with every turn of the page. "Hey Dad," she says cheerfully, her voice echoing off the high ceilings, "I found the old bikes. Remember how we used to go riding together? It's such a beautiful day out, don't you think we should get some fresh air?" She tilts her head slightly, her dark hair cascading over her shoulder.
Otis looks up from his paper, the lines on his face deepening as he considers the bike, and then his daughter's enthusiastic expression. He sighs heavily, setting the paper aside. "Amelia, you know I've got a bad knee. Can't say I'm too keen on busting it on a bicycle at my age," he says, his voice gruff but not unkind. He glances out the window, where the sun casts a warm glow over the overgrown garden.
Her smile doesn't waver, as Amelia approaches him with gentle steps. "But Dad," she counters, placing a hand on his shoulder, "Doctor Holloway said that low-impact exercise could be exactly what you need. And it's not like we're planning to ride the Tour de France. Just around the neighborhood, maybe to the park?" She gives his shoulder a playful squeeze.
Otis looks at her hand for a moment, then back up to her eyes. He's not one to easily give in to persuasion, but he can see the earnestness in her gaze. "Alright," he grumbles, pushing himself up from the chair with a bit of effort. "But if I regret this, you're buying me a new knee," he says with a chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. The newspaper falls to the floor as he takes the bike pump from her outstretched hand. "Let's get these tires filled up first. Can't have a flat before we even start." He pumps the tire with a bit more vigor than expected, the rubber hissing as it fills with air.
Amelia's eyes light up as she hears the bike pump hissing away, a clear indication that her father is at least willing to give it a shot. She hurries to her room, her excitement bubbling over. Inside, she rummages through her closet and pulls out a pair of tight, black bicycle shorts and a neon pink sports bra. She quickly changes, her heart racing as she thinks about the potential adventure ahead. The fabric clings to her curves, and she admires herself in the mirror, feeling a sense of empowerment. She grabs a matching pink helmet from her shelf, the same one she had when she was a teenager, and heads back to the garage.
