Summer Heat: A Stepson’s Secret - by Elise Montgomery

It begins with the heat. Marcus arrives at the lakeside house for the final weeks of summer, expecting only the quiet care of his step-grandmother. Evelyn has always been practical, composed, the woman who keeps the coffee strong and the doors locked at night. He has never looked at her the way he looks at her now—silver hair loose in the humidity, the soft authority of her body moving through thin summer clothes, the way the air itself seems to cling to her skin. He watches. He locks his door. He whispers her name into the dark. One afternoon the door is not fully closed. She walks in. She sees everything. She hears her own name spoken in a broken voice. The door closes. The house fills with a silence neither of them can endure. Days of careful politeness follow. Ordinary gestures become electric. Then Evelyn does the unthinkable: she names the desire out loud and offers a single, adult solution.
