Summer Under One Roof: Soft Bodies, Quiet Heat - by Elise Maren

Elena arrives with one suitcase and the quiet intention of being as little trouble as possible. Her stepsister’s house is already thick with summer; the air clings, the fans turn slowly, and every room feels closer than it should. She tells herself the visit is temporary, ordinary, easily forgotten once her own apartment is finished. She does not expect the heat to rewrite the rules of her body. Alex is solid, direct, impossible to ignore when the space between them shrinks. Ethan is quieter, deliberate, the kind of presence that settles under the skin before it is noticed. Their mother moves through the same rooms, ordinary and present, so every glance, every accidental brush of skin, every breath held too long must stay careful. Elena has never thought of herself as someone who draws that kind of looking. Softness, she believes, is simply what middle age leaves behind. The house begins to teach her otherwise.
