When a jaded art restorer takes a commission in a crumbling Venetian palazzo, she discovers the masked owner demands more than her expertise he demands her surrender, one room at a time. Venice in winter is a city of ghosts. Fog on the canals. Doors that open to empty rooms. A kind of silence that feels like waiting. Sofia came here to restore a fresco and forget a man who made her feel small. Instead she finds Matteo, a masked owner of a crumbling palazzo who doesn't want her to fix his paintings. He wants her to understand them. Each room holds a fresco that mirrors her own journey. Each scene of surrender, of offering, of trust, peels back another layer of her defenses. And each night, as the canal laps against the stones, he pushes her further. Not into pain. Into truth. The Canal at Midnight is a slow descent into elegant domination. A love story told in four rooms. A mask that hides everything and reveals more than either of them expected.

Chapter 1 - The Commission

The fog came off the canal in sheets, damp and cold, wrapping itself around the vaporetto stops and the crumbling facades. Sofia pulled her coat tighter and watched the water slap against the stone steps. Graffiti on a shuttered palazzo. A gull picking at something dead. Venice in winter didnt try to be beautiful. It just was.

She checked the address again. Cannaregio, a palazzo set back from the main channel, its entrance hidden between a laundry line and a closed bakery. No plaque. No bell. Just an iron gate with a tarnished ring.

She rang it anyway.

The gate buzzed open without a voice. Inside, a narrow courtyard with a dry fountain, dead leaves in the basin, and a single light burning in a window three floors up. The staircase smelled of salt and old wood. She climbed.

On the third floor, the door was open.

"Avanti."

The voice came from somewhere deep inside. Male, low, with an accent that softened the edges of the English. Sofia stepped through.

The apartment swallowed her. High ceilings, frescoed walls that had seen better centuries, furniture draped in dust cloths like ghosts. Candles on every surface, wax drips frozen in time. The air smelled of turpentine and something floral, something dying sweet.

She found him in the studio.

He stood with his back to her, looking at a wall of scaffolding. A fresco the size of a chapel window showed a woman on her knees before a seated figure. Her hands were bound with silk cords. Her head was tilted back, throat exposed. The seated figure wore a mask.
