The Frame in Her Arms: Nowhere to Put Him - by Cassandra Mile

He arrives with one bag and a spare key. Elena gives him the back room, an extra plate, and the rules of a house that has already outlived a husband. Shoes off. Last bus. She cooks too much because that is how she keeps a crisis from becoming a scene. Alex stands when she enters. She notices that she likes it. He notices the red glasses, the black hair coming loose, the weight she carries under ordinary cardigans as if no one is meant to look. Winter settles in the sills. An extra blanket. A shoulder held a beat too long. A bathroom door that does not catch. What begins as occupancy becomes appetite with a lock on it: her voice assigning where he may put his mouth, which rooms are allowed, when he is sent back down the landing unfinished. She will not call it love. She will not be made into a solution. The chain still goes on before the street goes quiet.
