Jonah does not come down when the stair gives. The clipboard is already on the table, initial blank, and the no he says in the doorway is smaller than a signature and more expensive than one. One step back: a county window, a form that wants the occupant, a clerk who says son and is not corrected. Papers hit the floor. Rainer’s first motion is toward the door. The stack he makes afterward is real, late, and useless as a mouth. They have kept the address. Mornings were supposed to stay a page: slack named, inspection assigned, use that could be initialed and therefore contained. Jonah needs the summon or the days unmoor. Rainer needs the page so a body does not become a claim. A missed window puts them in one motel room. Off the record, he says, and means the house is untouched. Jonah calls it one bed so he will not have to send him off. Neither account survives the line.
