Mara nods before she knows the nod is a signature. The valley man leaves the invoice on the stump and does not come up the steps. The black shepherd is already across her boots. Dust thins. The door she paid for stays wide. A week earlier the bargain was simpler. A key, a rate, a shoulder that will not take another night in the truck, a rule spoken once on a hood: do not feed him, he does not come in, he was here before the lease. She throws the bolt. Morning finds the porch scored and a strip of hide on a nail, and she calls it some other fight. The battery dies. He sits between her and the door. At dawn his teeth hold a blanket, not skin. Both things can still be walked back. Then the shoulder locks, the trunk is the nearest place to sit, and a word she uses on job sites fails on her wrist.
