The Unofficial Sheet: What He Won’t File - by Cole Harlan

Walter notices the timesheet first. Badge gaps. A crate count light by the exact margin a tired supervisor would shrug off. Nate is twenty-seven, back under the same roof while his mother stays abroad, walking small thefts to see if anyone is still watching. Walter is fifty-three and has not forgiven himself for the one seal he initialed too fast. He puts himself on the floor. White gloves. A rail. A secondary that should have ended on paper. He stamps Nate clean and names the side door instead. What begins as policy follows them home: plaster instead of steel, nitrile instead of distance, a search that learns the heat of a body Walter will not write down. Nate wants a rule that will hold. Walter wants authorship over the official story.
