Mandy stood at the kitchen sink, her eyes glazed over as she mindlessly scrubbed at the dishes. The mundane task offered a brief respite from her swirling thoughts, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. The silence of the house was too thick, a stark contrast to the usual hum of her 19-year-old son, Jim, playing guitar in his room or his muffled laughter from the living room as he watched YouTube videos. She squeezed the sponge under the running water, the rhythmic patter echoing through the tiles.

The bloodstain on the boxer shorts she had found in the laundry basket had been small, almost insignificant amidst the tangle of clothes. But it was unmistakable, a crimson smear against the white fabric that had sent a shiver down her spine. She had tried to ignore it, telling herself it was probably just a minor injury, but the nagging concern grew like a weed, choking the air in her chest. She had to know.

Mandy took a deep breath and approached Jim's room, her heart thudding against her ribcage like a trapped bird. She tapped lightly on the door, her hand hovering in the air as if it might flee at any moment. "Jim?" she called softly, "Can I come in?"

The music stopped abruptly, and she heard the rustle of fabric and the thump of a book being placed hastily aside. "Yeah, Mom," he responded, his voice a little too casual. She pushed the door open to find him sitting on the edge of the bed, his guitar leaning against the wall.

He looked up, and their eyes met, his filled with the kind of wariness reserved for teenagers caught in a lie. She searched his face, trying to discern the truth behind the mask of innocence. He had always been a good kid, but she knew that even good kids could keep secrets. "Everything okay?" he asked, his gaze shifting away from hers.

Mandy swallowed hard, clutching the damp dish towel in her hand. "I found something in the laundry," she said, her voice quivering slightly. She held out the boxer shorts, the bloodstain a stark reminder of the unspoken fear that had been growing inside her. "What happened, sweetie?"

Jim's cheeks flushed a deep red, and he looked away, fidgeting with the frayed edge of his jeans. "It's nothing," he mumbled, his eyes darting around the room as if seeking an escape. "Just an accident."
