The warehouse was sweating.
Three hundred bodies under the lasers, and the bass came up through the concrete floor and into everyone's bones like a second heartbeat. Mia had been dancing for an hour, and she'd danced herself down to a slick shine, crop top stuck to her, little skirt riding up her thighs with every bounce, and Conrad watched her from two feet away the whole time. That was the arrangement. He'd driven. He'd carry her home. She was his little sister and she was twenty-one and she'd looked at him last week with big eyes and said please, just once, I want to see the lights, and he'd said no twice before he said fine.
She'd been so good all night. Careful. Sipping water. Checking in.
Then she leaned up on her toes against the crash barrier, mouth against his ear.
"Give me one."
He looked down at her. "No."
"Conrad." Her pupils were already wide and happy from the music alone. "I'm twenty-one. It's a rave, not a funeral. I've been so good. I did ALL my research, I know the dosing. I know the water rules. I'm not an idiot. I'm your sister and you helped raise me better than an idiot." Her fingers walked up his chest and plucked at his collar. "One. And then you stay on me all night like a bodyguard. That's the deal. That's the whole deal. You don't leave my side and nothing bad can happen to me, because you're the biggest thing in this building."
He should have said no a third time. He knew that. He'd replay it later, the moment, the exact drop of the bassline underneath it.
He gave her one.
She swallowed it dry, grinned at him, and went back to dancing, and for twenty minutes it was the same. Then the wave came up.
He saw it land. He watched it happen in real time, from the outside. Her arms stopped mid-motion and floated down. Her chin lifted. Her whole face opened like a window, and a smile spread across it that belonged to a different, warmer universe, and she turned in a slow circle with her arms out, laughing at the lasers, trailing her fingers through the beams like they were solid.
"Oh," she said. "Oh, WOW. Okay. Okay, that's, wow, everything is so, the FLOOR is in my FEET." She grabbed his hands and put them on her waist like they'd been missing there. "The floor is in my feet, Conrad. The bass is in my TEETH. I can feel my teeth buzzing. Is that normal? Don't answer, I don't care, it's incredible, I love my buzzing teeth."
"Water," he said, and held the bottle to her mouth. She drank, never breaking eye contact, and said thank you with her eyes in a way that was suddenly older than the moment before.
Then she got close.
She came in slow, wrapping her arms up around his neck, and she moved against him to the beat, and she put her mouth against his ear, and her voice had dropped all the way down.
"I have to tell you something and I'm going to tell you now because everything is true right now. Everything is SO true." A breath against ...
