Home for the Summer
I dumped my bags on the floor in the entrance way, and took a deep breath. It was good to be home. My first year away at college was rough. I found my classes hard, my professors were unfriendly, and my roommate was smelly and loud. Four months at home for the summer were what I needed to re-evaluate what I wanted to do with my life. I wasn’t sure college was for me, but I didn’t know how to tell my parents that.
Daddy came in behind me, huffing with a big box. Lucky he was tall and really built. He worked in construction, and came by his muscles honestly, hauling heavy lumber every day. His arms bulged in his t-shirt sleeves, and his shoulders were so bulky, I was sure he was bigger than last summer. I was staring, admiring the strength of my dad, when he put the box down and noticed where I was looking.
I met his eyes, and saw a flicker of something, there and gone.
“Daddy, you look even more muscled up, have you been working a lot of hours at the site lately?”
He grinned, and flexed his arms in a cheesy pose. “I have, you like it? Maybe I can pick you up on my shoulders like I did when you were little.”
I laughed. “I’m 19, not four, I’m too old for that.”
He grinned at me and winked. “You’re never too old to be picked up by your dad, baby.” His voice turned deeper when he said it, and I suddenly wanted him to try. It was a childish urge, and I was embarrassed to even think it. I’d never ask him to lift me up. Daddy was only about 40, but he didn’t need to risk putting his back out trying to pick me up. I wasn’t the skinniest, and I’d gained the freshman 15 and then some this past year.
“Daddy, I’m too big for you to pick up.” I went to go outside to get the last bag, and Daddy stopped me with his hand on my arm.
“You’re perfect, baby, I could pick you up as easily now as when you were a kid.” His eyes were so intense, I knew he meant it. My dad and I were always really close, closer, I think, than either of us were with my mom. She hadn’t even come along to pick me up from the dorm today. I heard a door open, and steps on the stairs.
“You’re home. Well, get unpacked and give me a hand in the kitchen, Jenny.” I stood there for a moment, hurt by her cold welcome. Daddy laid his big, warm hand on my back and rubbed it.
“Go on and help your mom. I’ll bring in the rest of your things and put them upstairs.” I turned to smile at him, trying not to let the ache show on my face.
I went into the kitchen, and Mom was scrubbing potatoes, more vigorously than necessary.
“What do you need help with?”
She didn’t turn to me to answer. “You can get the chicken out of the fridge and season it.” Her voice was clipped, and her body seemed tense.
I took out the chicken, and got it ready for the oven. “Is something wrong, Mom?”
She sighed, and turned to me.
“I need a change, Jenny. I think I’ve always known I wasn’t able to give your father what he really needs, and we’re struggling to just co-exist in this house.”
She searched my face, and turned away before continuing. “Maybe you can. You’re home for a while. I’d like you to take over doing things for your father. Do his laundry, make his lunch, whatever he asks for. I need you to step up.”
My heart ached, thinking that my parents might split up. Whatever I could do to keep them together, I would.
“If you think it’ll help, I’ll do whatever it takes. Please don’t leave, Mom.”
She looked over her shoulder at me and gave me a sad smile.
“I’m not planning to. I just need some distance from your father. I still love him, I just think you’ll be better at keeping him happy.”
If all it took was laundry and sandwiches, that was fine with me. I loved my dad, and making him happy would be my pleasure.
I heard him bring the last of my things in, and take all my clothes upstairs to my bedroom. While Mom and I worked in the kitchen, Daddy was taking a while upstairs, not coming down until dinner was almost ready.
He came in the kitchen and kissed my temple, putting his arm around my waist.
“Did you talk to your mom, baby?”
I nodded, looking up at him and reaching up to cup his cheek. “I did. She wants me to do stuff for you and keep you happy.” I grinned. “I think I can do that. How hard can it be?”
He froze for a moment, then smiled at me. “Might be harder than you realize, baby, but I’ll teach you how to give me what I need. By the way, I bought you some new clothes. They’re in your closet, and I put some of your stuff away in storage. I thought you might like a new wardrobe now that you’re focused on making me happy. I want you to wear some new, pretty things.”
My smile froze. “Daddy, I gained some weight while I was away, are you sure these things will fit?”
He stroked my hair, his calloused fingers rough on my scalp, but his touch was gentle. “I know exactly what your beautiful body is like, baby. Everything should fit just fine. If not, we’ll go shopping together and get more.”
I snuggled into his side, and he tucked me under his arm. His hand stroked up and down my side, showing me that he didn’t mind my soft rolls. Daddy always took good care of me, and loved to spoil me. I couldn’t wait to see what kind of clothes he bought me.
Mom put plates down with a clatter, and she looked at us with a satisfied expression. I saw her meet Daddy’s eyes, and they seemed to exchange a look. Mom lifted her chin in a tiny nod, and Daddy’s hand squeezed on my waist. He drew me over to a chair, and pulled it out for me to sit down. We ate dinner, Daddy asking me about how my last exam went. I shrugged, not admitting that I didn’t think it went well at all. Mom didn’t speak much, and after we ate and the plates were put away, she went upstairs. It sounded like she went to the guest room. I looked up at the ceiling, following her footsteps.
“Your mom moved her things into the spare room.”
I looked at Daddy. This sounded worse than I realized. “I’m worried about you, Daddy. Are you okay with this?”
He nodded, and kissed my cheek, then grabbed my hand, tugging me up out of my chair. “I am now that you’re home, Jenny. You’re all I need. Your mom and I were only dating casually when she got pregnant with you, and we stayed together to raise you, but now that you’re grown, we’re thinking about what we both really want and need. What I want and need is you. Your mom is still figuring out what’s right for her.”
We went into the living room, and Daddy settled me close to him on the sofa, his arm around my shoulders. He found us a movie to watch, and held me close, kissing the top of my head often, like he’d missed me and just wanted to be close. I rested my head on his shoulders and thought about how much I’d missed him while I was away. I didn’t want him to know how homesick I was in the dorm, often ...
