Soft Hours Full

  1. Prologue

Elena lay on her side with the late light slanting across the bed. The robe had fallen open along her back and hip; the cotton clung where sweat had dried and then warmed again. Buddy’s weight rested against her, the heavy white coat thick under her palm. Her hand moved in slow strokes along the ridge of his ribs, fingers sinking into the dense fur until she felt the heat of his skin beneath. The pressure inside her stayed constant. The knot held her open, a steady, swollen fullness that shifted only when he breathed. Each inhale pressed it deeper against the front wall of her body; each exhale eased it a fraction, then returned the same heat.

She kept her eyes closed. The window was cracked an inch. Outside, a mail truck idled at the curb, engine ticking over in a low, uneven rhythm. The sound came through the gap in the curtains and settled against the quiet of the room. Elena’s thighs were damp. A thin trail of fluid had cooled along the inside of one leg and then warmed again where her skin touched the sheet. She did not reach to wipe it. Her free hand stayed on Buddy’s side, feeling the slow rise and fall under the coat. His tail twitched once against the mattress. The motion tugged lightly at the place where they were joined. She drew a careful breath and held it until the tug passed.

The truck’s engine changed pitch. She heard the driver’s door open, then close. Footsteps moved up the walk. Elena’s fingers stilled in the fur. The knot pulsed once, a slow, involuntary tightening that made her hips shift a fraction against the sheet. She stayed still after that. The footsteps stopped at the porch. A moment later the mailbox lid clicked. The sound was small and metallic. Buddy’s ear flicked; the rest of him did not move. Elena opened her eyes. The ceiling was the same off-white it had been all afternoon. Light from the gap in the curtains crossed the far wall in a narrow band. She watched the band and listened to the truck pull away, the engine note dropping as it turned at the end of the block.

Her hand resumed its slow path along Buddy’s ribs. The fur was warm and slightly damp where her palm had rested. She could feel the steady beat under the coat, slower than her own. The pressure inside her had not lessened. Fluid continued to seep in small, intermittent amounts; she felt it gather and then slide when she adjusted her hip a fraction. The sheet beneath her was cool where it had not yet soaked through. She kept her breathing even. Outside, the street returned to its ordinary quiet. A car passed, then another. Elena closed her eyes again. Her fingers sank deeper into the white coat and stayed there. The knot held. She did not move to free herself.

  1. Chapter 1: Ordinary Saturday

Elena stepped into the kitchen still wearing the soft cotton scrubs she had worn through the morning appointments. The fabric clung lightly across the curve of her stomach and the tops of her thighs where the air-conditioning at the office had been set too low. Buddy rose from the mat by the back door, the white coat shifting as he stretched. She set her bag on the counter, ran water into his bowl, and watched the surface break when he drank. Droplets clung to the ...
