Horseback ride with Mom

570 words·3 min read

I'm sitting at the kitchen table, scrolling through my phone, when mom enters with a twinkle in her eye and a hopeful smile. She's dressed in her favorite outdoorsy attire: a pair of worn jeans, a button-up shirt, and her trusty boots. She looks so excited that I can't help but feel a tug at my heartstrings. "Hey, Mike," she says cheerfully, "I was wondering if you'd like to join me for horseback riding at the local club this afternoon?"

Looks up from my phone, eyebrows raised "Horseback riding?" I repeat, trying to hide my surprise. It's been ages since we last did anything like this together. "Yeah, sure," I reply, my voice warming up. "It's been a while since we've had some quality time. What made you think of it?"

Mom's eyes light up even more at my agreement. She starts rattling off the details, and I listen with a mix of excitement and nostalgia. "The club's got a new trail, and the weather's supposed to be perfect. It'll just be the two of us, like old times." She says, her voice filled with anticipation.

I nod along, picturing the gentle sway of a horse beneath me, the smell of the countryside, and the sound of hooves on the dirt. "Sounds like fun," I say, setting my phone aside. "Let me grab my hat and I'll be ready." As I stand up, I notice a hint of something new in the air—maybe it's the scent of adventure or perhaps it's just the dust from my long-forgotten hat. Either way, it's a welcome change from the stale office air I've been breathing all week.

We arrive at the stables, and the nostalgic scent of hay and horse sweat fills my nose, taking me back to my childhood. I look over at Mom, her eyes alight with the same enthusiasm she had when she first taught me to ride. "You know, Mom," I begin, "I can't believe it's been ten years since I turned nine and you got me that pony for my birthday. Time really flies."

Mom stops in her tracks, her hand resting on the stable's wooden railing. She turns to face me, her eyes misting over with a mix of joy and disbelief. "It really does," she murmurs, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Seems like just yesterday you were a gangly kid, all knees and elbows, trying to keep up with your little pony, Tilly." She shakes her head slightly, her eyes searching mine. "And now, you're about to turn twenty." A gentle sigh escapes her as she looks away for a brief moment, lost in thought. "Where did the time go?"

I follow her gaze across the paddock where a few horses graze lazily, tails swishing at flies. "I guess it's just life, huh?" I say, trying to lighten the mood. "But today's about making new memories, right?"

With a gentle nudge of her elbow, she laughs and nods. "Exactly. Now come on, let's go pick out our steeds for the day." We make our way to the stables, our boots crunching on the gravel path. The scent of fresh hay and equine musk fills the air, a potent reminder of the days when I used to spend every weekend here. The stablehands greet us with nods and smiles, recognizing Mom as a regular. She points to a couple of horses, "I've reserved these two ...
