This town sucked. There was nothing for me here. How could I feel like I was at a dead end when I was only 20? I graduated high school last year, and with no college in town, and piss poor grades to get a scholarship to go somewhere else, I was stuck trying to find a job here with just my diploma. I’d searched for the past year with no luck.
Okay, maybe I was too picky. But I didn’t want to be stuck in a dollar store job for the rest of my life! I needed something besides a brain-numbing retail job to give me purpose. Other girls in my class either went away to school, or got married and were working on babies. That wouldn’t be a bad option, but when it came to guys in this town, it was slim pickings. All the boys I went to school with were idiots, losers, or taken. None of them were worth the bother, but maybe in the big city I’d find someone worth dating. Someone who was big and strong, like my daddy, who could take care of me like I deserved.
I sighed, and pushed my dinner around on my plate. Daddy raised an eyebrow, and dropped the car mag he’d been reading.
“What’s got you so down, baby?”
I sighed again. Dramatic, I know, but this town really did suck. I shoved my almost empty plate away in a huff.
“I hate it here, Daddy. I want to go somewhere where I can either find a decent job or find a decent man to wife me up. This town’s got nothing.”
Daddy’s ridiculously handsome face struggled not to smile. “Maybe you’re not looking in the right place. What you need might be right under your nose.”
I rolled my eyes and dropped my head to my folded arms on the table. Then I had an idea and popped my head up.
“Will you loan me money to take a bus to Lawrencetown and maybe some rent money? I’m sure I can find a job or a man there in no time!”
