"Ah, there you are," said her father. "You know, there's a lot more to see in Hawaii than just this swimming pool."

"What do you want, Dad?" said Kimmy.

"Harry and I are going to go into town to pick out a present for Malcolm," said her father. "He's turning 40 in two weeks. Want to come?"

"Nah," said Kimmy. "I think I'll just hang out here for a while. We're going home tomorrow, so I want to work on my tan while I still can."

"Suit yourself," said her father. "But hey, not a word to Malcolm, okay? I told him I was going to give Harry some driving lessons. "

"Sure, Dad," said Kimmy. "Have fun."

"Love you, kiddo," said her father.

"Byeeee," said Kimmy.

She waited about fifteen minutes to be sure that they were gone, and then Kimmy got up from her lounge chair and made her way into the hotel. Her heart racing in her chest, she stopped in front of Malcolm's door and knocked.

"Um, who is it?" came the gruff reply.

"It's me, Kimmy," she said.

"Ah," said Malcolm, opening the door. "I was just about to lay down for a nap. Come on in."

Kimmy grinned as she bounced her way into the room. She looked over at Malcolm, who was dressed in one of the free hotel bathrobes.

He was so handsome. He had thick hair on his arms and such a broad chest. She knew that he was around six feet tall because Harry was always complaining about how he was waiting for his growth spurt to kick in so he could try out for the basketball team.

"So, what's up?" said Malcolm. "I've hardly seen you around these past few days. You're always laying out by the pool."

"Oh yes," said Kimmy. "I was evening out my tan lines."

"All right," said Malcolm. "So, uh, is there something I can do for you?

"Actually," said Kimmy. "There's something I can do for you. Something that I want to do for you."

"I don't understand," said Malcolm.

"Well..." said Kimmy, tracing one finger along the edge of the bed. "It's about your birthday."

Malcolm chuckled. "Don't remind me. I already found a few gray hairs ...
