My New Boyfriend

The door banged open and I jumped. My nerves were shot. The last few weeks had been hell and I wasn’t sure how much more I could take. I heard each footstep like a drum beat of doom. I looked around to make sure everything was neat and tidy, the smell of cleanser sharp and acrid, and turned with my back to the kitchen sink to plaster on a fake smile. My heart skittered in my chest, and my hands shook despite clenching the edge of the counter.

Gerald entered the room, and looked me up and down, an evil smile spreading on his rugged face. His wide chest and bulky arms stretched out his brown t-shirt, thick with muscle. His brown eyes once seemed warm, but now held nothing but lust and anger. I fought to control my trembling as he drew his gaze over my bare skin.

Why did I ever start dating him? He was so nice the first few weeks; taking me out for dinner, going for walks in the park, holding my hand, never pushing anything. He’d asked probing questions to get to know me. What I did, if I was close with my family, what I wanted from life. The kinds of questions you ask someone you want to get serious with. When he kissed me by the fountain in the town square on our tenth date, it was so romantic. Just a light pressing of our lips, so sweet I’d almost swooned. I convinced myself that he might be the one for me. So far, he’d respected my boundaries and acted like a perfect gentleman. Where else would I find a man like that in this day and age?

I’d really appreciated that he had taken things slow. I may be 25, but I still needed to go at a snail’s pace in a relationship. I wanted to know someone well before getting romantic, to build something deep and emotionally intimate first. Maybe that was why my relationships never lasted. Only one boyfriend had had the patience to wait long enough for us to get to a sexual stage of a relationship, but I was scared to do anything aside from the basics, and he bailed. He said I was too vanilla, and he didn’t want to waste time on a boring woman. It was crushing, but I wanted to stick with what I believed in.

I hadn’t dated at all for a year after that, until I met Gerald.

The next date after the kiss, he tried to feel my breasts. It was too much, too soon. Was he going to push me to go faster than I wanted? Had I misjudged him? When I pushed him away and asked him to slow down, he laughed lightly, cupping my cheek in his large, calloused hand.

ā€œCome on, baby, I know you’re made for me. I want to spend my life with you.ā€

My heart soared, and I pushed aside my concerns over his roaming hands. This was the kind of commitment I needed to let someone get close to me in a physical way, and he was validating my hopes for our relationship. He was so handsome, in a rough kind of way. Big, and really strong, with broad shoulders and large, powerful hands. I loved how I felt when he hugged me, so safe and sheltered in his arms.

That feeling was a lie, but I didn’t know it yet.

ā€œI feel the same way, Gerald.ā€ I blushed at the admission, baring my heart to him. He grinned, his eyes crinkling in happiness, and tugged me close for a kiss. This one was more passionate than the last one, crushing his lips to mine and probing with his tongue until I let me sweep into my mouth.

His hands wandered again, making their way to the sides of my breasts, but before I could stop him, he broke off our kiss and gripped my waist.

ā€œYou’re gonna move in with me, Maya. No point in waiting when we know we want to be together.ā€

I stilled, shocked. I was pretty sure I wanted to be with him, but that was something I wouldn’t even consider until we’d dated for a year or two.

ā€œThat’s a bit soon, Gerald. We’ve only been dating a few weeks. I’m not sure I want to take that step yet.ā€ My voice was hesitant, not wanting to offend him.

His face, normally so kind and sweet, grew dark. His eyebrows drew together, and his relaxed stance stiffened. His hands on my waist tightened until I felt trapped.

ā€œDid you lie when you told me you feel the same way as me?ā€

ā€œN... no!ā€

ā€œWell then, if you want to spend your life with me, let’s get started. You’re moving in with me today. I have a house with plenty of room. You can have your own room if you want.ā€ The corner of his mouth twitched on the last sentence, but I had no time to protest. He was pulling me to his truck and bundling me into the passenger seat. I opened my mouth to say something, to explain that I just needed more time, but he shushed me, and I fell silent.

He drove us to my small apartment, just a few minutes away. I was so stunned by this ...
