Layla’s Birthday

“Happy birthday!” We all whooped as Layla blew out the candles on her 18th birthday cake. Our siblings were restless and wanted their slice. There were 11 of us, and Layla was the third oldest. I was the eldest at 22, and my brother John was 20 and away on a mission with the Navy Seals. Our younger siblings were rowdy, and they started chanting for cake while Layla cut it up and started passing plates down. I didn’t miss all this noise and commotion. I had moved out when I was 18 on a full scholarship to a college across the state, and now that I had graduated, I had a one-bedroom of my own that was tidy and peaceful. Just how I liked it.

I didn’t know why my parents had so many kids. They couldn’t afford them, but kept having more. When my brother and I turned 18, our parents encouraged us to move out. I had the scholarship, and my brother enlisted. But I wasn’t sure what would happen with the rest of them. I didn’t keep in touch with anyone other than John much after I left for college. I didn’t have the money to come back home more than once or twice a year, and they certainly didn’t visit me. Now that I had a car and a good job, I didn’t want to come home. It just pissed me off to see them keep having more kids they couldn’t take care of.

I took my slice of cake from Layla, and realized she’d really grown up since I’d lived at home. She’d filled out, looking more like a woman now, with a full figure and long, wavy blonde hair. Her soft green eyes met mine, and she smiled shyly.

My parents were strange, and raised us to be sheltered from the real world. Even John and I were pretty innocent when we left home, and we talked often about how eye-opening it was. We certainly sowed our wild oats for the first year or two, dating girls for the first time and trying out booze and pot. Our parents would be horrified if they knew what we got up to. Me more so than John, who was kept busy with his missions all over the world. The last year or two, I’d settled down, the novelty wearing off. I still had the odd casual fuck, but no one interested me enough to pursue a relationship.

My parents had insisted I drive home for Layla’s birthday, and I had a bad feeling about what they had planned.

I was right.

After dinner, when the kids were in the living room watching a movie, they pulled me and Layla aside in the kitchen. Layla looked at me quizzically, so she obviously didn’t know either.

“Brent, your sister is 18 now, and has finished high school. As you know, we can’t afford to keep any of you at home once you’re adults, and your mother is expecting again so we need the room. Layla is yours now. You’ll take her home with you and be responsible for her. She’s been raised right, and isn’t able to manage this wicked world on her own. She needs family to protect her from the men out there who’d want to take advantage of her innocence.”

Fuck.

“Hard no. What the f…” I caught myself before swearing in front of them. My parents didn’t allow for cursing or anything they thought was sinful.

“This isn’t up for discussion. Layla, go pack your things. You’re going back with Brent tonight.”

She stammered in shock, but Dad stopped her with a slap to her face. “What did I tell you about being obedient? A woman’s job is to do as the man who has rights to her says, and your brother is now that man. You’re going to live with him and do whatever he says. Get your stuff and ...
