The overnight train to the coast was nearly empty when Roman hauled his duffel bag down the corridor, the metal floor vibrating under his boots. Holiday crowds had thinned to a handful of stragglers; most cars sat dark and locked. Renata walked ahead of him in that fitted black coat that never quite hid the generous swing of her hips, the soft spill of her breasts against the wool. Five years married to his father and she still looked like she had stepped out of some expensive magazine spread—full lips, heavy lashes, that thick dark hair pinned up loose so a few strands curled against the pale skin of her neck. Roman kept his eyes on the back of her head and tried not to remember the Christmas before last, when she hugged him goodnight in the kitchen and her body pressed flush against his for three full seconds longer than it needed to.
The conductor checked their tickets twice, frowning. “Private sleeper, yes—but the double was double-booked by error. Only the single left in this car. One narrow bunk. You’re family, yes? It will have to do.”
Renata’s mouth opened, then closed. A flush rose under the collar of her coat. “We’re stuck with it?”
“Last option until morning. Lights out in twenty.”
She glanced at Roman. He shrugged, trying for casual even as heat crawled up the back of his neck. “It’s fine, Renata. I’ll take the floor.”
Inside the cabin the space was smaller than he expected—barely wider than a closet, the single bunk running lengthwise under a fogged window, thin mattress, one scratchy blanket folded at the foot. A fold-down sink, a tiny locker, nothing else. The door slid shut with a hydraulic sigh that sealed them in. The train lurched forward; lights along the corridor dimmed to a dull amber.
