I’m lounging by the pool, the sun beating down on my pale skin, a glass of chilled Chardonnay in my hand. The silk shorts I’m wearing ride up my thighs, and my tank top clings to my small frame, barely covering the curve of my breasts. It’s a quiet afternoon in our gated community, the kind of place where nothing ever happens, where the biggest drama is a late housekeeper or a botched landscaping job. My husband’s at work, as always, leaving me alone in this oversized house with nothing but my boredom and a vague, nagging ache between my legs. I sip my wine, the bitterness sharp on my tongue, and glance out at the yard. The heat is unbearable, shimmering off the pavement, and I curse under my breath about how the grass looks patchy again. The housekeeper’s late, per usual, and don’t even get me started on the handyman. That guy, always skulking around, never looking me in the eye, like he’s beneath me, which he is. I’ve had to correct him before, snapping about his sloppy work, threatening to call his boss if he doesn’t shape up. He’s learned his place, or so I thought.
I catch movement out of the corner of my eye and turn my head. There he is, out by the shed, working in the blistering heat with his shirt off. His skin gleams with sweat, a deep, rich brown that catches the sunlight, and his muscles ripple with every move he makes. His chest is broad, thick with power, the kind of build that could crush someone like me without effort. His arms are massive, biceps flexing as he lifts a tool, veins popping under the skin like they’re about to burst. His torso tapers down to a narrow waist, abs carved like stone, and I can’t help but stare for a moment, my breath catching before I shake it off. He’s just a worker, nothing more, and yet my eyes linger on the raw strength of him, ...
