Roads Less Traveled
Ninya, a young woman with golden locks that cascaded down her back, sat in the quiet of the early evening. The chair beneath her was old and familiar, creaking with every subtle shift of her weight. She was engrossed in the pages of a book, her eyes flitting back and forth as her mind painted the vivid scenes the words described. The house she occupied was not her own, but rather her husband's parents' abode, nestled in the countryside.
Her hand rested lightly on her burgeoning belly, feeling the gentle movements of the life growing within her. Her thoughts strayed to Luke, her husband, who was away driving his truck across the vast expanses of the land. His job was the lifeblood of their small family, but it left her feeling a profound sense of loneliness, especially in these final weeks of her pregnancy.
The silence was suddenly pierced by the jarring ring of the telephone. Ninya startled, her heart racing as she set the book aside and waddled over to answer it. "Hello?" she breathed into the receiver, hope and anxiety mingling in her voice.
It was Luke, his voice a comforting rumble through the line. "Hey, baby," he said, the weariness of the road evident in his tone. "How are you holding up?"
Ninya felt a warm smile spread across her face, the tension in her shoulders dissipating. "I'm okay," she replied, trying to sound more cheerful than she felt. "Just missing you is all."
"I miss you too, more than you know," Luke said, and she could almost feel the sincerity in his words. "How's the baby doing today?"
Ninya's smile grew wider as she placed a hand over her belly, feeling the baby's response to the sound of its father's voice. "Kicking up a storm," she said, chuckling softly. "I think he's eager to meet you."
"Tell him to wait just a bit longer," Luke said with a laugh. "I'll be home as soon as I can, promise."
Ninya nodded, her eyes misting over. "I know, I just can't help but worry. I feel so alone here."
"You're not alone," Luke reassured her. "Why don't I call my dad? Maybe he could stop by and keep you company for a bit."
Ninya's eyes lit up at the suggestion. "That would be great," she said, her voice filled with relief. "Thank you."
They chatted a little longer, their conversation a lifeline that bridged the miles between them. Luke's voice was a soothing balm, calming her nerves and making her feel a bit less isolated. After they hung up, she couldn't shake off the feeling of anticipation that his call had brought.
Oliver, Luke's father, arrived shortly after with a gentle knock on the door. "Ninya, it's me," he called out, his deep, comforting tone resonating through the corridor. She hastened to answer, her pregnant body moving with a grace that defied its size.
The sight of him brought a fresh wave of comfort. His rugged face was etched with lines of concern, and his eyes crinkled at the sight of her. He was a tall, broad-shouldered man with a heart to match, and she was grateful for his presence.
"Thanks for coming, Oliver," she said, stepping aside to let him in. The scent of ...
