Secretary

820 words·5 min read

She stretches her slender arms, the early morning sun casting a warm glow through her bedroom window. She glances over at the clock, 6 AM, and groans slightly. Another day at the office. She quickly dresses in her tailored business attire, brushes her blonde hair into a neat bun, and applies her makeup. Her thoughts wander to her children, who are still sound asleep in their rooms. She smiles warmly, her eyes filled with love, and whispers a silent goodbye before heading out the door.

As Carmen starts her car, the engine purrs to life, and she backs out of the driveway, her thoughts swirling like the mist rising from the dew-covered lawn. She takes a deep breath, savoring the quiet before the bustle of the day begins. The radio hums gently, playing a classic rock tune that she's heard a hundred times before. The streets are eerily empty, and the world seems to be holding its breath as she drives towards the office. She glances in the rearview mirror, her eyes lingering on the fading image of her sleepy suburban neighborhood before it's swallowed by the growing cityscape ahead.

The office is a fortress of solitude at this early hour. She parks her car in the almost empty lot and heads towards the towering glass building. The lobby is quiet, with only the occasional hum of the cleaning crew's vacuums echoing through the marble halls. She swipes her badge, and the doors whisper open, revealing the dimly lit corridors that lead to her desk. The aroma of stale coffee and the faint scent of toner greet her as she makes her way to the elevator. Her heels click against the floor with a rhythmic cadence that's soon accompanied by the soft ding of the elevator's arrival.

She sits at her desk, her hands gracefully moving through the pile of files she had meticulously organized the night before. The sound of papers shuffling and the faint whir of the computer fan fill the space as she works. Her mind is already racing ahead to the tasks of the day, anticipating the endless emails and phone calls. She arranges the reports neatly on her desk, making sure the edges are perfectly aligned. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafts from the small kitchenette, a comforting scent that promises a boost of energy. She takes a moment to appreciate the quiet, knowing it won't last. The clock on the wall ticks away the seconds, each one bringing her closer to the inevitable chaos of the day.

The heavy thud of footsteps down the corridor alerts Carmen to David's approach. He strides into the office, his portly figure casting a shadow that seems to fill the room. His silver hair is disheveled, and his eyes are half-closed as if fighting off a hangover from the night before. He clears his throat loudly, a sound that seems to resonate through the otherwise still air. "Good morning, Carmen," he booms, his voice deep and gruff. He doesn't bother to hide his disdain for the early hour.

Carmen looks up from her work, flashing a professional smile. "Good morning, Mr. Taylor," she says, her voice crisp and clear. She stands, the caffeinated aroma of the coffee mug in her hand mingling with the lingering scent of her perfume. She carries it over to his office, balancing the stack of yesterday's reports in her other hand. As she enters, she notices the clutter from the previous day's work still scattered across his desk. "Your coffee, sir," she says, setting it down gently on the coaster next to his elbow. She places the reports in a neat pile.

David grunts in acknowledgment as he sinks into his oversized leather chair. His hand wraps around the warm coffee mug with a sense of relief, and he takes a deep, gulping sip. His eyes scan over the reports, his expression unreadable behind a wall of exhaustion. He sets the mug down with a gentle thud, the dark liquid sloshing against the ceramic. "Thank you, Carmen," he murmurs, his voice thick with the promise of the caffeine he so desperately needs. He adjusts his tie, the fabric feeling tighter than usual today. His gaze lingers on the documents, the weight of the company's future resting heavily on his shoulders. He clears his throat again, and when he finally speaks, his voice is firm, "Let's get to work, shall we?"

With a sigh that's both resigned and slightly hopeful, Carmen sinks to her knees before David's desk. Her fingers hover over the zipper of his pants. She's done this before, countless mornings, a silent contract between them that she's come to accept as part of her job. Her heart races as she anticipates his response, her mind a whirl of thoughts about her children and the bills that need paying. She takes a deep breath and pulls down the zipper.

She feels ...
