Sharp As A Knife

Twice as Painful

A erotic collection of BNWO stories

"The Door"

The socks were white. Ribbed cotton. Knee-high. The kind she'd worn in college — curling up on dorm floors with textbooks and highlighters, looking like innocence had been stitched into the fabric itself. That's what he loved about them. That's what made them a weapon.

She sat him down on the couch the way you sit a child before telling them the dog died. Gentle hands on his shoulders. A push backward into the cushions. Then she stood in front of him in the pleated black tennis skirt and the tight white baby tee, nipples pressing through the cotton like small accusations, and she said it.

"I can't fuck you tonight."

He blinked. Opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. "What do you mean you can't? What does that even —"

"I mean I can't. Not tonight. Not —" She paused. Bit her lip. Looked toward the kitchen. "Not anymore, maybe."

The word anymore landed in his chest like a brick through a window. He felt the glass everywhere. In his throat. In his lungs. In the spaces between his ribs where his heart was trying to beat around the shards.

"Anymore?" he whispered.

Isaiah appeared in the kitchen doorway like he'd been waiting for his cue. Tall. Broad. Wearing a grey hoodie and black joggers and the kind of calm that only comes from absolute certainty. He didn't look at the boyfriend. Didn't need to. The boyfriend wasn't the audience. The boyfriend was the obstacle.

"After what?" the boyfriend asked, voice cracking like cheap plaster.

She didn't answer. Isaiah crossed the living room in four steps, picked her up under the thighs like she weighed nothing, and she wrapped those white-socked legs around his waist the way she used to wrap them around her boyfriend on Sunday mornings when neither of them wanted to get out of bed. She looked back over her shoulder — one last look — and her expression was a masterpiece of cruelty dressed as apology. Sorry. Not sorry. Sorry you had to see this. Sorry you couldn't be enough. Sorry in the way someone is sorry when they step on a bug and keep walking.

The bedroom door closed. The lock clicked. And the silence that followed was louder than anything that came through the door later.

Because the sounds came. Eventually. Slowly. Like a tide rolling in.

First it was murmuring. Low voices. His deep, hers softer. The kind of murmuring that happens when two people are discovering each other's bodies for the first time — the whispered cartography of new skin. He heard her laugh. A real laugh. The kind she used to give him before things got comfortable and quiet and predictable.

Then the bed. The springs. The slow, rhythmic creak that built from tentative to deliberate to something that had its own pulse. He sat on the couch with his hands in his lap like a child in a waiting room, and he listened to his girlfriend get fucked by a man he'd never seen before tonight.
