When Restraint Shatters in an Instant

  1. Prologue

The club had exhaled its last patrons hours ago, leaving only the low hum of cooling amplifiers and the faint metallic tang of sweat-soaked air. Strobe remnants flickered through the half-open loading door like dying fireflies, painting irregular pulses across the scuffed black floor. Elena stood motionless behind the bar, a damp rag forgotten in her fist, knuckles blanched white. The glass she held caught one last blue knife of emergency light and threw it back across her cheekbone, sharp as accusation.

She had watched Sophia all night.

Not the way a manager watches an employee. Not the way a stepmother is supposed to watch the girl she helped raise through awkward teenage summers and quiet university years. She watched the way a woman watches prey that has learned, without ever being taught, exactly how to move through a room full of wanting eyes and still remain untouched.

Sophia was alone now on the empty dance floor, counting tips under the single ghost-light above the DJ booth. Her black crop top clung damply to the small of her back, the thin cotton darkened in a perfect V between her shoulder blades. Every slow sway of her hips—still answering music only she could hear—sent a fresh bead of sweat tracing the elegant line of her throat, catching light before it disappeared beneath the fragile chain of her necklace. The necklace Elena had given her two birthdays ago. Silver crescent moon. Innocent then. Dangerous now.

Elena’s tongue moved against the roof of her mouth, tasting gin she hadn’t drunk and the ghost-salt of skin she hadn’t yet touched.

Sophia bent slightly to slide a stack of bills into the metal cash box, ass lifting in unconscious invitation, the leather of her shorts riding high enough to expose the tender crease where thigh met cheek. Elena’s breath caught—raw, audible in the silence—and she felt the answering clench low in her belly, hot and liquid, the same treacherous pulse that had started months earlier when Sophia first laughed too close to her ear while handing over a tray of drinks.

She should have left. Should have locked the office, taken the back stairs, driven home to the too-quiet apartment and cold sheets. Instead her feet carried her around the bar’s end, heels clicking once, twice, then deliberately softening as she crossed the sticky floor.

Sophia didn’t look up until Elena was close enough for the scent of her—gin, citrus peel, warm skin, the faint expensive smoke of the cedar candle she always burned in the office—to reach across the last foot of space between them.

When Sophia finally raised her eyes, they were dark, pupils blown wide from dim light and something else. Recognition. Invitation. Fear.

Elena stopped.

The rag dropped from her fingers. It landed soundless on the floor.

Sophia’s lips parted—whether to speak or simply to breathe deeper, Elena never knew—because in the next heartbeat Elena closed the distance. One hand found the nape of Sophia’s neck, fingers threading into sweat-damp hair, gripping just hard enough to tilt her head back. The other hand pressed flat against the girl’s sternum, feeling the frantic rabbit-beat beneath thin fabric, the sudden hard peaks of nipples rising to meet her palm.

Sophia inhaled sharply through her nose. The sound was small, almost polite. Then Elena leaned in and took her mouth.

Not gently.

The kiss was teeth and hunger and six months of swallowed want. Sophia’s lips were soft, tasting of cherry ChapStick and the faint metallic edge of bitten tongue. She made a broken noise into Elena’s mouth—half protest, half plea—and her hands flew up, not to push away but to clutch at Elena’s shoulders, nails digging crescent moons through cotton.

Elena backed her slowly against the nearest amp stack. The metal grille was still warm, radiating stored heat against Sophia’s spine. When the backs of Sophia’s thighs hit the edge of the low platform, she gasped, mouth opening wider, and Elena took the invitation—tongue sliding deep, claiming every slick corner while her thigh pushed between Sophia’s legs, pressing up against the seam of leather shorts already damp at the crotch.

Sophia whimpered. The sound vibrated straight down Elena’s throat.

She broke the kiss only to drag her open mouth along the girl’s jaw, down the column of throat, teeth grazing the fragile chain until the crescent moon pressed cold against fevered skin. Sophia’s head fell back against the amp, exposing more throat, more pulse. Elena bit—not hard enough to mark, just hard enough to feel the flutter of carotid beneath her lips—and Sophia’s hips jerked forward, grinding once, helplessly, against the firm muscle of Elena’s thigh.

The friction drew a low, animal sound from Sophia’s chest.

Elena’s hand slid down, palm skating over the quivering plane of Sophia’s stomach, fingers dipping beneath the waistband of leather shorts. She found lace—already soaked through—and pressed two fingers flat against the swollen, parted lips beneath, feeling the heat, the slickness, the way Sophia’s clit throbbed visibly against cotton when she dragged the lightest pressure over it.

Sophia’s knees buckled.

Elena caught her, one arm banding around her waist, holding her upright against the amp while the other hand worked slow, deliberate circles through drenched fabric. Each pass drew fresh wetness, a soft, obscene squelch barely audible beneath their ragged breathing.

Sophia’s eyes were glassy, unfocused. Her mouth worked soundlessly for a moment before she managed one trembling word.

“Please.”

Elena smiled against her throat—slow, predatory, tender.

She hooked two fingers inside the lace edge and tugged the fabric aside.

Cool air kissed fever-hot flesh.

Then Elena’s fingers slid home—slow, inexorable—knuckle-deep into tight, clutching silk.

Sophia’s entire body seized. A high, keening cry tore from her throat. Her walls fluttered wildly around the invasion, greedy and terrified in equal measure, slickness coating Elena’s hand in a hot, slippery rush.

Elena ...
