What Still Counted After

  1. Prologue — The lock decides

The glass had gone black. Pines stood in it as a darker black, and the sunroom held the day’s heat in the cushions the way a closed fist holds warmth. Lena lay on her side along the couch, lavender knit rucked under her arms, one knee drawn high toward her chest so the soft inside of her thigh lay open to the room. Moose was fitted to her back. His chest covered her from shoulder blade to the swell of her hip. His breath came wet and steady against the nape of her neck, stirring the fine hairs there, and each exhale smelled of kibble and the clean iron of an animal who had been outside.

She had meant, earlier, to stop at the tongue.

That intention was still somewhere in the house. It was not in her. Her jeans were on the rug with the underwear still caught in one leg. The throw had been pushed to the floor so it would not be under them. Her belly rested against the cushion seam, heavy, warm, a little slick where sweat had gathered under the fold. When she shifted, the knit dragged across her nipples and the drag went straight down, mean and bright, into the place he was already occupying.

He had mounted badly at first. Paws too high, the blunt slide of him glancing off her ass, leaving a wet stripe in the crease. She had reached back without looking. Her fingers found the hot, slick shaft where it had emerged from the sheath, narrower at the tip, already thickening toward the base, pulsing against her palm in a dumb animal rhythm that had nothing to do with patience. She lined him up. The tip nudged, missed, nudged again, and then caught at her entrance where she was swollen from his mouth, from the long slow licking that had come before this, from the way she had held his ruff and rocked onto his tongue until her voice went thin.

The breach was a stretch she felt in her teeth.

A sound left her, not a word. He answered by driving in, short eager strokes, fur ticking along her lower back, the weight of him settling as he found the angle. Each push seated him deeper. The couch creaked under the combined load of them. She heard her own wetness, a soft obscene catch every time he withdrew, and the low huff he made when her body gripped him on the way back in. Her cunt fluttered around the intrusion. She was tight and very ready and ashamed of how ready, the shame sitting right beside the want and not winning.

“Easy,” she said, and did not mean it as a stop.

He was not easy. The pace picked up, clumsy and sure, his hips snapping, the head of him striking a place that made her thigh jump. Fluids gathered and slipped out around him, slicking the back of her thigh, cooling where the air found it. She pressed her face into the cushion and breathed the smell of washed cover and her own sweat. One hand braced on the couch back. The other slid under her belly, protective and useless, feeling the jolt of each thrust travel through soft flesh.

Then the base began to swell.

She felt it as pressure first, a growing insistence at her rim, knocking and not yet entering. Instinct said shift forward. Habit, the newer one, said stay. The swelling caught on an outward stroke, tugged, caught harder. He pushed. The knot popped past the tight ring of muscle and seated, sudden and enormous, a hard ball locked inside her. Her mouth opened against the cushion. The fullness was total. It pressed everywhere at once, against the front wall, against the tender spot that made her see white, sealing his come in before most of it had even arrived.

He throbbed. The first pulse was heat, thick, flooding the space the knot had closed. Another. Another. She clenched without deciding to, and the clench made the lock tug, and the tug tore a sob out of her that was not pain. Her clit pulsed in time with him. Release hit sideways, not the sharp climb of his tongue but a deep convulsing grip around the thing that would not leave, her stomach tightening, her toes curling, a rush of her own wetness forced out around the seal and down onto the cushion in a warm spill she would have to explain to no one tonight.

They stayed.

His paws flexed on her ribs. His breath slowed. Inside her the knot held its size, occasional small shifts making her gasp and then go quiet again. Sweat cooled on her lower back where his fur had plastered it. The sweater stuck to her breasts. She kept her eyes on the glass because the glass showed nothing, and nothing could be told later as a mistake of sleep.

Somewhere beyond the room a fact was already moving toward the drive. She did not know its hour. She knew the lock in her body, the mess cooling under her hip, the weight that would not be shrugged off until it decided to shrink. Her fingers found his foreleg and rested there, not petting, only touching, while another aftershock walked through her and left her open-mouthed, still full, listening to the pines tick against the dark.
