Chapter 1
The Pool
The heat hits like a wet towel the second I step out of the lobby. Florida in August. The pool shimmers turquoise under a sky that is trying to storm but does not have the energy. The afternoon crowd is thin — a few retirees, a young couple napping, and a guy at the swim-up bar talking loud enough to hear from the parking lot.
That guy is Greg.
He is mid-forties, soft in the middle, wearing a Patagonia vest over a t-shirt that says HOP FIEND. He is waving a half-empty piña colada at the bartender and explaining code deployment to a woman who looks like she would rather drown in the shallow end. She sits on the stool next to him, one leg crossed over the other, a glass of white wine untouched at her elbow. Dark hair in a low knot. Black bikini with a mesh cover-up. Gold chain around her ankle. She is beautiful in a real way — fit but soft, lines around her eyes, a body that has waited long enough.
I take the stool on Greg's other side.
"—and I told them, you cannot push to production on a Friday. Rule number one. But nobody listens to the senior engineer. So guess who is debugging at 2 a.m.?" Greg turns to me, already including me in a conversation I did not join. "You in tech?"
"Crypto," I say. "Trading."
"Oh, crypto. Wild. Respect." He clinks his glass against the bar like I toasted him. "I am Greg. This is my wife, Claire."
I nod at her. "Jake."
Her eyes flick to mine. Brown, not green — I was wrong from across the pool. The kind of brown that swallows light. She gives me a tight smile, the smile you give a stranger your husband just roped into a bar conversation, and then looks back at her wine glass. She has not taken a sip. Just spins the stem between her thumb and forefinger.
Greg keeps going. He tells me about their vacation, the drive from California in a Tesla, how this is their first real trip since the pandemic. He is friendly in a way that feels less like warmth and more like need. Like a golden retriever who has not been petted in years and just discovered a new leg.
I order a beer. Something local. The bartender pops the cap and the sound cuts through Greg's monologue for a second.
"What do you do, Claire?" I ask.
She looks up, surprised that I asked. Greg jumps in: "Oh, she is in marketing. VP level. Big firm. She is the breadwinner, honestly." He laughs. "I am the fun one."
"Is that what you are?" Her voice is dry, a blade wrapped in silk. She says it without looking at him.
Greg does not catch the edge. "See? She kids. She is the serious one. I am the comic relief."
I watch her while Greg signals for another drink. Her posture is perfect but tired — the exhaustion of someone who has been performing "good sport" for a decade. Her left hand rests on the bar top. The diamond on her ring finger catches the sun, a decent stone in a platinum setting. The ring is tight, a little indent in her skin beneath it. Like it has been there so long her body has given up ...
