The Florida Arrangement

The photo is her bathroom counter. A digital ovulation monitor. Peak fertility. Flashing smiley face. Next to it: her basal thermometer, 98.14 degrees. A sticky note in her handwriting. Today. Tomorrow. Now.

I stare at the screen. The blue light paints my palm.

Three months since I saw her. Three months since the baby. She has sent me photos of the infant in between. A boy. Space-themed name. Greg’s choice, obviously. She never captions them. Just sends. I look. I do not respond. The arrangement was never about conversation.

I book the flight while I am still hard.

The Hyatt in Pasadena. Same as last time. She insisted. She said the room remembers us.

I do not believe in memory. I believe in scent.

The elevator smells like chlorine and lobby flowers. My floor is the eighth. The hallway carpet swallows sound. I do not knock. She gave me the key code three hours ago. 0417. The month she ovulated the first time.

I punch it in. The lock clicks.

The room is dark. She has drawn the blackout curtains. One lamp glows amber in the corner. The air is different. Thicker. Sweet in a way that makes my jaw tighten before my brain catches up.

She stands by the window. Backlit. Silhouette first.

Her body has changed.

I see it immediately. The hips wider. The waist softer. The breasts heavy under her silk robe. The robe is cream. Expensive. Not practical. Not cotton. She wore cotton with Greg. I know this without asking.

She turns.

Her face is the same. Dark hair in a low knot. Gold ankle chain catching the lamplight. She never takes it off. Not for me. Not for him. It is her tether. I understand this now.

But her eyes. Her eyes are different. Hungrier. The brown has gone liquid. Like she is running a fever she does not want to cure.

“You smell different,” I say.

She smiles. It is not a polite smile. It is the smile from the pool bar. The one that said she had remembered she was alive.

“So do you,” she says. “Salt. Soap. No cologne. I dream about it.”

She crosses the room. The robe shifts. Her thighs brush. The sound is silk on skin. She stops in front of me. Close enough that I can smell her.

The scent hits me in layers.

First: grapefruit. Her lotion. The same.

Second: musk. Stronger than before. Saltier. More complex. Her skin has changed. The bacteria. The chemistry. Everything is louder now.

Third: milk-sweet. Faint. Under the musk. Not sour. Not baby. Something primal. Something that says her body has done what it was built to do and wants to do it again.

My hands move before I decide to move them. I grip her waist. The softness there is new. I can feel the difference through the silk. She has not snapped back. She has settled into a new shape. A mother’s shape. It makes my fingers dig harder.

“Greg thinks I’m at a retreat,” she says. “Mommy self-care. Meditation. Juicing.”

“Are you juicing?”

“I’m ovulating.” She presses into me. Her hip bones align with mine. She is shorter. She has to tilt her head. “I tracked it for three weeks. Basal temp. Cervical mucus. LH strips. I started before my doctor cleared me. I didn’t care. My body knew.”

She unties the robe. It falls.

Her breasts are fuller. The nipples darker. I can see the blue veins beneath the skin. I touch one. She gasps. The sensitivity is not the same. It is more. Everything is more.

“Do they leak?” I ask.

“Sometimes. When I’m close.” She watches my face. “Does it bother you?”

I answer by bending my head. I take her nipple in my mouth. The taste is faintly sweet. Not milk yet. Just the promise. She shudders. Her hand knots ...
