Keeping Her Company: What Step-Grandmas Are For - by Clara Ellison

Three afternoons a week Ethan is sent to the old farmhouse to keep his step-grandmother company while the heat wave grinds on. He calls it the babysitting sentence. She greets him with quiet warmth, closes the guest-room door most of the way, and rests. The door never fully latches. One afternoon the sheet slips. What begins as a stolen look becomes hesitant fingers on sleeping skin, then the urgent press of a body that has never known this kind of heat. Rose wakes to the unmistakable reality of her step-grandson inside her—shocked, protesting that it is wrong, yet feeling the raw, trembling need that has taken him over. What follows is not a single stolen moment. It is the slow, irreversible rewriting of every visit that comes after. Guilt collides with permission. Resentment softens into hunger. And the woman who once only offered iced tea and gentle conversation offers something far more lasting: her body, open and waiting, whenever the need rises.
