Chapter 1: The Rule
The apartment was smaller than either of them had wanted. One bedroom for her, the living-room couch that folded out for him, a kitchen you could cross in four steps. Mark had moved in two weeks after the papers were signed—his lease was up, her rent had doubled, and neither of them had the energy to pretend the other option was better. At twenty-four he was finished with school and working nights stocking at the distribution center; she was forty-six, still in the same admin job she’d had for fifteen years, and still learning how quiet a house got once the last of the shared furniture was gone.
They managed for the first month. She cooked. He took out the trash and fixed the dripping tap. They watched whatever was on after dinner and went to their separate beds without much talking. But the silence had weight. She caught herself noticing the way his shoulders filled the doorway when he came in from the gym, the low sound he made when he stretched in the morning. He stopped leaving his door cracked when he jerked off in the shower; the water ran longer and the walls were thin.
One Tuesday she came home later than usual. The dating app had coughed up another man who wanted dinner and then disappeared when she said she wasn’t interested in anything serious. Mark was already on the couch in gray sweatpants, scrolling, one hand resting low on his stomach. He glanced up.
“Bad one?”
“They’re all bad.” She kicked her shoes off and sat on the other end of the couch, not quite far enough. “I’m tired of pretending I want conversation when I just want someone to fuck me until I stop thinking.”
He didn’t laugh. The remote stayed in his hand. After a moment he said, “You could just ask me.”
The words sat between them. She looked at him—really looked—and felt the heat that had been building for weeks settle low in her stomach. He was hard under the sweatpants. Not fully, but enough that the outline was clear. She didn’t pretend she hadn’t noticed.
“That’s a terrible idea,” she said.
“Probably.” His voice was steady. “But I’m here, you’re here, and neither of us is getting anything else right now. I’m not asking for anything complicated. Just… if you’re horny and I’m home, or the other way around, we say so. We handle it. Then we go back to whatever we were doing.”
