The smile is already on Caleb’s face when he takes Helen’s bag at the door. Under the table, his knee stays against Graham’s. Neither of them has a sentence ready if she looks down. A night ago the study lamp was on, the crop aligned and unused, the release through June waiting on a signature Caleb did not pick up. He had come in without knocking.
