The Exit Not Taken
- Prologue — The lamp and the cuff
The lamp threw a small, mean gold across the blotter and left the rest of the study in walnut dark. Caleb stood inside it with his sweater already off, folded once over the chair because Graham had told him, earlier, not to drop clothes on the rug. The air held polish, hot metal from the lamp stem, and the sweet thin smell of the lotion Graham kept in the drawer as if it were another kind of ink.
Graham had not picked up the crop. It lay where it lived, black against the scarred leather, a line Caleb’s eye kept catching and refusing. His thighs still wore the older marks, faded to a warmth that woke when wool moved. Tonight Graham had kissed those marks. That was the part Caleb could not file. A stroke had a number. A mouth on the back of his thigh did not.
“Hands on the desk,” Graham said.
Not unkind. Not loud. The voice he used when a column would not balance.
Caleb bent. The edge met him just under the ribs, cool through nothing, because there was nothing left to take off. His cock hung heavy, already flushed, brushing the panel. He heard Graham uncap the bottle. Heard the wet sound of it between fingers. Then those fingers, broad, slow, pressing at him until the muscle gave and one slipped in to the knuckle.
Caleb’s breath left him in a shiver he tried to keep on the wood.
“Say if it’s too much.”
“It isn’t.” His voice came out rough. “Don’t stop checking.”
A second finger. The stretch burned, then opened, a dull sweet ache that climbed his spine. Graham turned his wrist, patient, spreading him, the lotion slick enough to sound obscene in the quiet. Caleb pushed back before he meant to. Graham’s other hand settled on the small of his back and held him to the pace Graham wanted, which was slower than the want.
“Greedy,” Graham said, almost to the lotion. “You came in here without knocking.”
“You left the itinerary out.”
“That wasn’t an invitation.”
“It was enough.”
Graham made a low sound, not agreement. He worked a third finger in and Caleb’s knees softened. The fullness sat right against the place that made his cock jump and leak onto the panel, a clear thread he could feel cooling. Graham noticed. His fingers curled. Caleb bit the inside of his arm.
“Look at the page or look at me,” Graham said, the old correction, useless now, because Caleb was facing the grain of the desk. “Not the door.”
“I’m not looking at the door.”
The fingers left him. Empty, clenching on nothing, humiliating. Then the blunt heat of Graham’s cock, nudging, not driving. Graham waited there, one hand spread over Caleb’s stomach, the other braced beside the crop. Caleb could hear both of them breathing. He could hear the tiny tick of the lamp as the bulb warmed.
“Last chance to go upstairs,” Graham said.
Caleb heard the file in it. The exit Graham needed available so the rest could be called chosen.
“Don’t,” Caleb said. “Not upstairs.”
Graham pushed in.
The first inch stole the air. Caleb’s hands slid on the blotter; a pen rolled and clicked against the crop. Graham stopped when he was halfway, letting the burn settle, his thumb stroking once, absently, at Caleb’s hip. Then he sank the rest, a long thick claiming that seated him deep enough Caleb felt it in his throat. They stayed like that. Joined. Graham’s trousers still mostly on, belt tongue ticking the desk. Caleb’s forehead on his wrist. The smell of sex already rising under the polish.
Graham drew back and fucked into him again, slow, the whole length, a wet drag that made Caleb’s toes curl against the rug. Again. The rhythm was not cruel. It was exact. Each stroke found him and held a second too long at the hilt, grinding, so the head pressed where Caleb could not think. His cock swung and slapped the panel, leaking steadily. He heard it. He heard Graham’s breath go uneven, the one crack in the invoice voice.
“Quiet,” Graham said at his ear. “Walls are only walls.”
Caleb nodded against his own arm. A sound still broke out of him when Graham changed the angle, shorter thrusts, heavier, the desk creaking under the heel of a hand. Graham reached around and took his cock, not teasing, a firm stroke timed to the fuck, thumb smearing the wet at the head. Caleb’s thighs shook. The faded crop-lines woke under the grip at his hip. He was close and angry about it and pushing back anyway, ...
